WHEN THE CARRILLON SOUNDS
A micro-theatre show, specially made for the Actual Festival in Logroño during its 2017 edition. The different scenes take place in a very small space: the two stories of the Ibercaja Clock Tower. The first level contains the machinery and the second the carillon’s bells. This is aimed to an audience of just fifteen people maximum.
This is a Magic Realism piece in which Martín Nalda, Josué Lapeña and María Martínez Loza all directed by Cipriano Lodosa compose an exquisite staging, which begins right before the quarters strike and ends right at the hour strike. Script written by Martín Nalda who also plays adorable “Don Andrés”.
The plot deals with a fictitious love story related to the clock traditions and its peculiarities such as its well-known melody. Dreams and fantasy are part of reality, enrich ordinariness and give this piece a sense of transcendence.
Since 1948…every hour…, The Carillon Clock performs its melody: “…Shepherds leaving to… Extremadura” and via this song, we are told the harsh love story that took place right here, the reflection of a broken country…
…”Now, with those bells, I picture María right below them, with Andrés’ letter in her hands, tears to the wind and ours souls together in the same fist. And it is then when I understand that book, on Andrés’ eyes: This is why you should never ask for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee…” part of the review by Jonás Sainz for “La Rioja” newspaper
